What Are Minimally Invasive Restorations?

Here is a look at some of the minimally invasive restorations we offer at Little Boots Pediatric Dentistry:

SDF offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional dental fillings. When applied to areas of decay, the silver component eliminates harmful bacteria, and fluoride remineralizes the tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay from progressing. SDF can stop tooth decay in its tracks until a child is ready for a traditional restoration or the tooth naturally falls out.

SDF offers an excellent solution for desensitizing severe hypersensitivity kids may experience from hypoplastic molars, characterized by underdeveloped enamel. The alternative treatment requires no anesthesia and no drilling, making it an ideal solution for young patients who are fearful or anxious about dental procedures. The main drawback is that SDF leaves dark stains on the areas of decay. However, the ease of application and the noninvasive nature of treatment make it a choice cavity solution for some of our young patients.

The Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) combines the benefits of SDF with glass ionomer (white filling material), providing a minimally invasive restorative solution without the need for local anesthetic. After applying SDF to halt the decay, we place a tooth-colored filling material without the need to remove any tooth structure. This helps restore the tooth and mask the staining caused by SDF.

Aside from sealing the cavity and covering any SDF stains, the glass ionomer material releases fluoride over time, which further helps prevent cavities from progressing. Depending on the extent of the decay and damage, the SMART technique may require multiple visits to complete.

This technique offers a minimally invasive option to restore decayed primary molars without anesthetic shots and little to no drilling. It involves placing a pediatric dental crown over the affected tooth to seal off the decay. The key idea behind the Hall Technique is to isolate the cavity, which helps prevent the decay from spreading and allows the healthy structure to remain intact.

Compared to dental fillings, the Hall Crown Technique can offer better outcomes and less time in the dentist's chair for early decay. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes to complete and has been found to be highly effective for halting decay until the baby tooth falls out naturally. In most cases, no further treatment is necessary.

White spots can appear on the tooth surfaces, most often due to demineralization, fluorosis, or post-braces treatment. ICON resin infiltration is a minimally invasive restorative solution that helps reduce the appearance of white spot lesions on the tooth enamel without anesthesia or drilling.

During treatment, we gently etch the tooth enamel to expose the porous layer beneath and apply a fluid resin, which infiltrates the porous tooth structure. This helps fade away and balance discoloration. Next, we use a curing light to harden the resin and polish your child's teeth, delivering a more uniform, healthy smile.
