Here is a look at the most common dental emergencies and actions to take.

Knocked-out permanent tooth If the tooth is only partially dislodged, place gentle pressure on it to keep it in place. If, however, it is completely dislodged, hold the tooth by the crown without touching the root, rinse it gently, and try to re-insert it into its socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in milk or saliva and call our office immediately.
Knocked-out baby tooth Apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding. We do not recommend re-implanting knocked-out baby teeth to prevent infection or damage to the incoming permanent teeth. However, it's important to have your child evaluated to avoid complications.
Toothache Rinse with warm water and use floss to dislodge any food or debris that may be trapped between two teeth and causing pain. If needed, offer Children's Motrin or Tylenol to relieve your child’s discomfort. Do not place pain meds or gels on the aching tooth or gums to avoid tissue irritation. Contact us for immediate care.
Facial swelling Facial swelling can result from a serious infection requiring immediate care to avoid complications. If the swelling is severe or your child is having trouble breathing, please head to the nearest emergency room for immediate care.
Broken Jaw If you believe your child has a broken jaw, place cold compresses and head to the nearest emergency room for immediate assistance.
Chipped or broken tooth Locate any broken or fractured pieces of the tooth and place them in some milk or saliva to keep them moist. Call our office to have your child evaluated.
Lost crown or filling Keep the area clean and avoid chewing hard foods with the affected tooth. Call our office for the next available appointment. Never use super glue or any other adhesives to hold the crown or filling in place.
Soft Tissue Injury If there's bleeding from an injury to the tongue, gums, lips, or cheeks, use gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding cannot be controlled, head to the nearest emergency room for immediate care.

Note: Keep in mind that these are general guidelines. In the event your child experiences a dental emergency, please seek professional care.
